2011 Stephen H. Schneider Symposium
The 2011 Stephen H. Schneider Symposium will pay tribute to Steve Schneider's contributions to climate science and identify key challenges in climate science, policy and communication.
Steve Schneider was a leader in science communication and an expert on interdisciplinary climate science. At the time of his death on July 19, 2010, he was the Melvin and Joan Lane Professor for Interdisciplinary Environmental Studies at Stanford University and a senior fellow at Stanford's Woods Institute for the Environment.
A reception is planned for the evening of Aug. 24 followed by a formal two-day symposium Aug. 25-26.
The symposium will be structured in two parts. Part I will address Schneider's contributions to specific areas of climate science, such as cloud and aerosol effects, the role of the ocean in climate change, "nuclear winter," the impacts of human-induced climate change on ecosystems, and the economics of climate change. Part II will examine how these individual pieces of the climate change puzzle fit together and will explore broad, interdisciplinary themes that were of interest to Schneider.
The three-day event will bring together many people whose lives intersected with Steve's - fellow scientists, science communicators, policymakers, students and friends.
If you pland to attend the symposium, please send an email with the subject line "YES" to Sarah Jo Chadwick at: SHSsymposium@gmail.com.
